Volcano and Aurora, colours of natural light sources
[posted by Benz Roos]
Arnthor Ævarsson made this wonderful picture of the volcanic eruption together with a Aurora. Here a description of Arnthor to describe this unique moment and photo:
“My biggest Kodak moment – by Arnthor Ævarsson / Hveragerdi, Iceland
As a prelude to the current massive volcanic eruption in Eyjafjallajökull, a moderate eruption took place just days before on the east side of the volcano. The location provided an opportunity for up-close encounters with picturesque craters and lava flows, in contrast to the inaccessibility of the current eruption site. With a team of Jeep enthusiasts and other photography nerds, I was able to travel to the remote site of the eruption. We crossed the glacier Mýrdalsjökull using vehicles specially modified for glacial driving, in the Icelandic fashion, lucky enough to catch the perfect day in between days of blizzards and poor visibility. As we crossed the glacier, we were overwhelmed by the magnificent views of the Icelandic nature in geological action, evidently living up to its reputation as ‘The Land of Ice and Fire’. At the site of the eruption, we could only humbly watch the power of nature presenting us with a scene of roaring fire and earth’s landscaping in action as the lava flowed from the crater to lower grounds, accompanied by the buzz of helicopters providing sight-seeing tours for enthusiastic volcano tourists. The visual impression got even more intense in the twilight hour, bringing out the vivid colors of the fire, set against the dark blue sky. As we got ready to leave that night and finished getting our obligatory volcano portraits taken, I notice the Northern lights appearing in the starry skies above the volcano for a fleeting moment – the biggest Kodak moment of my life”I think it’s a interesting in natural phenomena, especially the different colours of natural light sources. please check his photo stream on flickr here. and his agency photo stock plus for more cool pics of iceland and volcanic eruptions!

NASA’s new Sun
[posted by Benz Roos]

A full-disk multiwavelength extreme ultraviolet image of the sun taken by SDO on March 30, 2010. False colors trace different gas temperatures. Reds are relatively cool (about 60,000 Kelvin, or 107,540 F); blues and greens are hotter (greater than 1 million Kelvin, or 1,799,540 F). Credit: NASA/Goddard/SDO AIA Team
NASA’s SDO is the most advanced spacecraft ever build to study the activity of the sun. This is one of the first images the SDO, or Solar Dynamics Observatory. Those early images that confirm an unprecedented new capability for scientists to better understand our sun’s dynamic processes. These solar activities affect everything on Earth. Have a look on the SDO website for some interesting videos and images.
It’s really interesting to see our natural light-source in this scientific research, great inspiration! source: NASA, found: core77 -

Hellvetica by Rachel Katstaller
[posted by Donald®]

Design by a lighter
So at typography class, we were asked to create type with material we had never used. it could be anything. so my teammate, eduardo lovo, came up with the idea of creating helvetica with fire, and renaming it “hellvetica”. This is our final presentation, done with a camera and a lighter and a lot of patience.

Sanaa’s O-LED fixture
[posted by Benz Roos]

O-LED concept fixture by Sanaa for Zumtobel
Japanese architects Sanaa have developed this concept O-LED fixture for Zumtobel. O-LEDs are great everyone in the lighting world will agree, however all O-LED fixtures seems to be a bit disappointing. Why is that? Is expectation too high? or are O-LED not cool enough or does it all needs to take time? However in the end I had to say I quit like this Sanaa design! source:designboom
