Tree with glowing shoes in Richmond
[posted by Benz Roos]

Glowing shoe in a tree
“These glowing shoes have been spotted around town in Richmond, Virginia, at least 12 pairs. The shoes are hung like ordinary shoes that are thrown over a power line, only these are only found in bare trees. Not really sure what the meaning behind it all is but they sure are peaceful. Each shoe has a small solar panel attached to the heel and they come alive as the sun goes down. The light that glows from within also flickers like a campfire. Every pair seen is a pair of mens, black dress shoes. One other thing is that they all have a gold anchor moniker on the heel.” by Alice, source: Wooster Collective

The Brit insurance designs of the year 2010 is currently on show in the design museum London. The exhibition show the best designs in Architecture, product, fashion, transport, interactive and fashion design. I like the lighting design by Ove Arup for the museum by Herzog & de Meuron. Especially the pixelated effect of the wall, the light seems to eat the wall form inside. Ayala Serfaty made a very atmospheric installation of brittle lights, created from intertwining forms of 2mm wide tinted glass filaments. Dilight made a very cool abacus of little red leds.

Restless Ron Arad in the Barbican
[posted by Benz Roos]

God and war by Ron Arad
The Barbican center in London is currently showing a major retrospective of designer Ron Arad. Lots of curves, polished and rusty metal, volumes and sketchy shapes. I like this very simple piece for the blog. the word ‘GOD’ is made up out of black mini spheres. Each sphere has a little mirror. All the mirrors together reflect the word ‘WAR”. It’s a bit boring and simplistic piece art, however I like the used technique!

Fire fly created by MIT researchers
[posted by Benz Roos]
Flyfire, a project initiated by the SENSEable City Laboratory in collaboration with ARES Lab (Aerospace Robotics and Embedded Systems Laboratory) aims to transform any ordinary space into a highly immersive and interactive display environment.
In its first implementation, the Flyfire project sets out to explore the capabilities of this display system by using a large number of self-organizing micro helicopters. Each helicopter contains small LEDs and acts as a smart pixel. Through precisely controlled movements, the helicopters perform elaborate and synchronized motions and form an elastic display surface for any desired scenario.
This is an amazing idea, it takes so much into account. It’s artistic poetic dream in combination with high technology.

über-hip Lightbotz by Marcus Tremonto

Laser boy by Marco Tremonto
American lighting designer Marcus Tremonto has customised a series of vinyl characters for vinyl toy manufacturer Kidrobot. This may be very trendy and über-hip but I kind of like it. It’s some simple cool other mix between lighitng and illustration. This makes the lightfixture playfull. source: Dezeen
