GE announces new efficiency(56lm/W) on O-LeD
[posted by Benz Roos]

o-led desk lamp prototype by GE and KM
“GE and Konica Minolta announced that they have achieved a “major breakthrough” in their white OLEDs: an efficient 56Lm/w flexible white OLED that is made using solution-coatable materials in a roll-to-roll printing process. The materials have “commercially viable lifetime” (we do not know exactly what they mean by that).”(o-led info). See the press statement here.
It’s quit exciting this new technology, however the fixtures and design-ideas are really boring. Like the ugly desk lamp pictured above. I’m really looking forward to see the first amazing designs for this superb technology! source: oled info -

Beyond 3D screen
[posted by Benz Roos]
Beyond – Collapsible Input Device for Direct 3D Manipulation beyond the Screen from Jinha Lee on Vimeo.
“What would it be like to reach into a screen and manipulate virtual objects as in real world. We present Beyond, a novel collapsible input device for direct 3D manipulation. When pressed against a screen, Beyond collapses in the physical world and extends into the digital space of the screen, such that users can have an illusion that they are inserting the tool into the virtual space. Beyond allows users to directly interact with 3D media, avoiding inconsistencies of input and output without having to wear special glasses. Users can select, draw, and sculpt in 3D virtual space and seam- lessly transition between 2D and 3D manipulation. We de- scribe detailed interaction techniques, implementation and application scenarios focused on geometric design and pro- totyping.” (From: tangible media at mit)
Sorry this has nothing to do with lighting, but I think it is a fantastic device! Since I draw almost at a daily basis 3d models, this would be absolutely fantastic to sketch in. Maybe this coudl eb made as a portable flexible O-LED device? source: designboom -

Time of the sky
[posted by Benz Roos]

Watch by ryohei yoshiyuki that shows the color of the sky to indicate the time of the day
Japanese designer Ryohei Yoshiyuki has designed a watch that indicates the time of the day by showing the color of the sky. “The sky color is mean to remind you to look up at the real sky, from time to time, in this busy life of ours. ‘we are always looking at some kind of window, on the computer, mobile phone and so on. and now a small window on one’s arm…’ ” Light makes the blue hue of the sky changes during the day. This is of course caused by the rotation of the earth around its axis and the sun. Time is created by this rotations, so it makes perfect sense to combine those two elements into a single watch. Can’t wait till Ryohei makes an O-LED version of the watch. source: designboom

Ultra thin Oled fixture 'Lightleafs' by Valentina Trimani
Valentina Trimani has designed this O-led bookmark fixture. The bookmark provides just enough light to read a book in the dark. Really nice simple and use full concept for the O led technology. source: designboom

Sony’s new O-LED screen
[posted by Benz Roos]
Sony is showing off a new 4.1″ rollable OLED display at SID 2010. The new display has a 423×240 resolution (121ppi) with 16.8 million colors and a 1000:1 contrast ratio. It’s only 80 um thick.
The video shows how fast and weirdly the O-LED industry is developing. I think that most of the O-LED light fixtures are quit boring compared to this! It also show the real opportunity for the use of O-LED technology! So in the future we’ll just have roll-out your light fixture if you need a bit more light on your desk. source:o-led info - Older Posts »
